Basset Hounds are indeed hunting dogs

Amy and I went to Sam's Club Saturday afternoon (as previoulsy reported) and we had a few minutes to unpack the perishibles and let Lucy out of her kennel before we had to leave for the dinner/fundraiser we attended. While surfing channels we heard Lucy outside doing something to the drainspout. Amy went to investigate and came back reporting that Lucy was chasing a bug.

The problem is it continued and she started barking. Amy went out again and came back telling me there is something IN the drainspout, she had heard it. So I go to investigate. I didn't hear anything, but I tapped and rattled the drainspot and thought I heard leaves or something shift. I look down and out flies a CHIPMUNK! It has a little altitude coming out the spout hits the ground and tears across the backyard to the concrete retaining wall and jumps perfectly into one of the drainage holes and disappears. Lucy is in hot pursuit and is VERY mad that she could not catch this cute little guy.

As I understand, beagles and foxhounds chase fox. Bassets were bred to sniff out and hunt small game like rabbits and squirrels so Yeah for Lucy as she has now successfully chased a chipmunk and cornered an opossum in our backyard. She's also skilled at birds, squirrels and cats. I'm glad we're not in Florida because the geckos would make her never shut up.

Didn't know that a basset hound could run! LOL, my aunt had two, the best was Magoo. Cute picture!

It's amazing how fast Lucy can run on those short legs. If we had a secure field we'd let her loose to run it out. As it is, she does mad laps around the backyard.

Lucy is so adorable! I can relate to the 'sniffing' out thing. We have a 9 mth old Beagle and he's a super sniffer! When we walk him he's always trying to catch a scent and follow it.

I often wonder what he'd ever do if he actually saw one of the rabbits he tracks in the snow.

Great picture of Lucy! I mean, Lucy the might huntress. We have a part lab named Beau who is the same with bugs (chases them around the yard), birds and squirrels. He's even had a latenight encounter with a possum also (the possum tricked him and made it to freedom over the fence!). But, you know, honestly I have never seen a chipmunk. I wonder if we have those here. I know our dog would go nuts. He's a digger, and a barker. Oh, and he does laps too. We call them "crazy Ivans", he runs in figure 8's in the backyard. That's from an old submarine movie, I think it may be Hunt for Red October. Yes, we're odd and boring people here :)

My Libby is not a hunter, she's a herder...and a fur lined vacuum cleaner. The only thing she hunts is fallout from the kitchen.

Lucy looks like she is extremely entertaining! Great picture.

Your dog is way too cute! We have a beagle and she can seriously hunt nothing! We always joke that her sniffer must be broken! :)

I think if ever I was to get a dog it would look just like Lucy- seriously cute - how could anyone resist those big eyes

We have an english bulldog and she can't even smell when we have a treat in our hands! She relies solely on sight.

Our friends each had bassett hounds and they were awesome dogs!

She is a beautiful dog. Growing up there was a basset that used to hang around my grandfather's house in Canton. I don't think it was really his....it just took up there. Anyway it had the longest ears and its name was Bowser. Unlike Lucy, Bowser slept all the time and moved like a sloth.

Say, have you tried the chicken pie at Sam's...the one with the lattice crust...found near the fancy cheeses and pizza. OMG, its very good.
