Trivia Tuesday

We went to Tijuana Joe's to play tonight with the Houghs, Bill, Angela and baby Emily (who peed on Amy). They were joined by their friends they were housesitting for, Ross and Suzanne. Everyone contributed to the victory and we even won despite the Indian/Pakistani family cheating (thier son came out of the bathroom and ran to the table exclaiming "I have the answers" during the round two bonus question).

Here are some of the best of the night.....

What are the names of the two Atlanta Thrashers hockey players who were involved in a fatal car crash?

What were the first five nationally broadcast cable TV channels?

What was the name of the palatial estate owned by the Cane family in Citizen Cane?

What is the real name of Jane Roe from the famous Roe v. Wade court case?

What country's Prime Minister is Ahmoud Olmert?

Who scultped "The Thinker" and what author is the inspiration for the piece?

Sparky Duck Tag

Okay, so Sparky Duck did not tag me, but the Phillies beat the Braves today, making it the first time this year the Phillies have been over .500 AND the first time this year the Braves have lost a series at home!

So here are the questions Sparky Duck had to answer.....

What were you doing 10 years ago?
Hrmm, May of 1997... I think I was starting to work at Planet Hollywood. I had gotten mad at my boss at Blockbuster and quit in April because I had plans to travel to Atlanta for Easter and he decided I could not have the time off after tickets were paid for and such. I tried to work out a schedule but he refused, and the schedule I proposed was used anyway because I was not there. I guess I was correct about my value because they hired me back about 2 years later when I asked to come back.

What were you doing 1 year ago?
I was settling in back to work after our second Pentz Family Disney Cruise and talking to Amy more about international adoption after we met a couple on the cruise who had adopted twice from China.

Five snacks you enjoy:
1.Popcorn - especially at the movies.
2.Funnel Cakes - my Pennsylvania fair upbringing.
3.Tastykake Apple Pies - again, Pennsylvania.
4.California Navel Oranges (Ducky had a fruit here too, the the CA are much better than FL)
5.Snyders of Hanover Pretzel Nuggets.

Five songs that you know all the lyrics:
1. The theme to Greatest American Hero
2. "Lost in Your Eyes" by Debbie Gibson
3. "All I Want is You" - U2
4. "If we are the body" - Casting Crowns
5. "Does Anybody Hear Her?" - Casting Crowns

Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:
1. Pay off all of our debts.
2. Repair the A/C and radio in the Jeep and buy my Chevy Avalanche and Ford Mustang.
3. Set aside all the needed funds for our adoption trip.
4. Pay off the house and get it painted inside and out, a new door and new garage doors, and have the stereo wires concealed in the walls in the family room.
5.Thrashers season tickets and dugout level tickets for every game the Phillies play in Atlanta.

Five bad habits:
1. Not exercising.
2. Procrastinating
3. Trying too hard to be funny and inadvertantly hurting peoples' feelings.
4. WWE
5. Not finishing laundry-I am great at starting it, but awful at folding and putting it away.

Five things you like doing:
1. Playing Poker
2. Watching TV/Movies
3. Travel
4. Reading
5. Having marital relations.

Five things you would never wear again:
1. Plaid pants - with the Duck on this one.
2. A uniform shirt or nametag.
3. Planet Hollywood/Hard Rock T-shirts.
4. Goofy straw hat like my dad has from Margaritaville Cafe (my head is too big for mine)
5. Brown shoes with blue pants.

1. Yahtzee (hand-held electronic version)
2. R/C 4x4 truck
3. Digital Camera - Canon Rebel Digital (gift from Amy)

Friday Flashback #26 - Summertime

A little late today, as Youtube was being difficult. We only make it back to 1991 this week, but this is a classic song for Memorial Day weekend as it is the unofficial start to Summer!

Captain Morgan - This will make you laugh

A funny truth

This morning I was listening to part of the Neal Boortz show (boortz.com) when I heard the following exchange between the host, Neal Boortz, the producer Royal Marshall, and call screener Belinda.

Neal : I have a trivia question for you. Well, it's really more a question for you to use your best judgment to answer. Paris Hilton has been sentenced to spend time in jail.

Belinda : Do we know exactly what for?

Neal : It essentially boils down to probation violation. She was caught driving numerous times on a suspended license and feels she is above the law because she is Paris Hilton.

Neal : So anyway, in recent weeks, when she has been photgraphed by paparazzi, she has been carrying a particular book and holds it up for all of the photographers to capture in the pictures. What book is she carrying around and showing?

Royal: The Bible?

Neal : Absolutely correct, Royal.

Royal ; I'm surprised it isn't burst into flames while in her hand!

Church Stuff & an Opinion Requested

Part One : Another church visit

This morning Amy and I visited another church, North Metro Church in Kennesaw, GA.

We know quite a few people who attend North Metro and we've heard good things (to me the one downfall being a completely contemporary style). So Amy got off work this morning and we had breakfast and went to visit. We saw two couples we know who are also adopting as we arrived and we sat with Tim and Laura. Amy and I have an uncanny ability to pick Sundays to visit when either there is a special program or the pastor is out of town or both. Today was no different.

Aside from 2-3 worship songs (all completely foreign to us) at the beginning, they had an announcement or two about volunteering for ministries. It appears there is a LOT of money at this church because the ministry volunteer packet is four-color glossy and multiple-pages bound. The focus of the service today was baptism, not the subject, the action. The entire hour was 15 or so people, I think 12 of them under age 14, being baptized. Again about the money, and the contemporary thing, it was like watching the Olympics on TV with all the back-stories. Every person receiving the sacrament had a professionally-produced video that ran as their entourage came to stand near and their "special celebrity" dunker came up to administer the dunking. It was stuff like, Hi, my name is Johnny and I'm 8 years old. I like to play hockey and football and basketball and I go to __________ school, and I decided I want Jesus in my heart because ____________.

It made me think a lot about the scene in which John the Baptist is baptizing people in the river and Jesus comes to the scene. There was no video package introducing him or any of the others John baptized that day. It was a simple gathering. It made me remember the classic film depictions of baptisms in the South, with a choir on the shore of a river or lake and people wading in, fully clothed, and being baptized. I was not entirely comfortable with the multi-media event I witnessed this morning.

We'll go back to visit this church again next week or the week after, hopefully to hear a sermon. BTW one of the ministry volunteer positions was people to prepare treats for and to serve the worship band during the services. Would this be done in the green room? Is it in the contract rider that they get only Evian and no orange M&M's in the candy jar?

Part Two: A question I was asked...

While Amy slept this afternoon I went to Winston's to play cards. Cheryl, the lady who runs the card games asked how I was doing and I explained a bit about the experience this morning. She asked me if I could give her some advice, and this is the story she told me.

Cheryl has a long-time friend who is working with a church in the mid-west and is pursuing a degree in ministry. This friend has a son who is married and the son and daughter-in-law are Atheists. The son and his wife had a baby girl recently and Cheryl's friend told her that he planned to baptize (christen) his granddaughter contrary to his son and daughter-in-law's wishes. Cheryl's response was asking if he was crazy? He did not take it well, and the conversation ended abruptly after that. I think she said they have spoken once since then, but she still is concerned as to the right thing to tell her friend and the right thing for him to do.

My advice:

It sounds like a bad situation to have to advise people on, but I think I have a good neutral angle and suggestion. I think Cheryl should call her friend and propose he do this.
It is the prerogative of the parents to raise their child as they see fit so long as they are not abusing or otherwise endangering the child. The grandfather should not secretly or overtly christen the baby against the wishes of her parents. It is very likely that the grandfather will have the opportunity to witness to the baby as she grows up, and Cheryl told me the son does not mind his father telling the baby about God and Jesus. As she ages into mental maturity, she will be able to make a decision for herself as to what she believes and the grandfather can guide her as she grows.

Until then, and especially now, the grandfather can do this... if he is a growing leader in his church and wants the support of the congregation regarding his granddaughter, I suggest he have a prayer of dedication for the baby (most likely in her absence). As the christening/baptism of a baby is about the parents announcing their desire and intent to raise the child to know and follow Christ, and for the congregation to affirm that choice and promise to support the child's walk, it would be perfect to do that in the absence of the baby and even perhaps set a weekly time to pray for the baby and it's parents. The congregation would be doing the same thing they normally would, simply without having the baby there and seeing it symbolically cleansed with water.

Thoughts and opinions? Cheryl thought I had given some great advice.

Tonight

Well, it's been an interesting evening what with napping on the couch for two hours, watching Lucy and Pixel play together all evening, and starting to watch Heros. My brother downloaded the entire season and burned DVD's for me, so I've been sitting in front of the laptop all night. I am enjoying it, but I really want to know what's up with Nikki and her apparent death-spasm, and what's with this unseen Sylar who has apparently cut open the brains of people on multiple coasts?

Beyond that, I went to work feeling very tired this morning but I made the best of it, with the breakdown coming at the end of the shift when we had a $400+ order to go out to an apartment complex and the one manager who is causing the most trouble for me with other staff members decides not to complete his work, leaving it for me and not telling me about it so I have to panic to get the order ready and to the guest late. The problem is there is no punitive recourse against his actions and if I complain, it will make me look like a whiner, this while my job is threatened due to the attitude the staff has towards me in part because of this guy's actions (complaining to them about me).

Anyone wanna pay me about $45,000 to do something I can do and enjoy with little other human interaction?

Friday Flashback #25 - Concert for Hope

In the mid-1980's Amnesty International came to the highest point of it's worldwide attention supporting human rights and drawing attention to states that violated them for political reasons. A number of popular musicians toured to raise awareness and raise money for the cause. The first video, for the song Biko by Peter Gabriel is about one such individual. Stephen Biko was a journalist in South Africa during the reign of Apartheid. He was jailed for many years and eventually died in prison, murdered by the government. An awesome movie, Cry Freedom, depicts this story starring Denzel Washington in one of his first roles as Biko and Kevin Kline as a fellow journalist who tries to raise awareness of Biko's plight in South Africa and across the world.

A Rant with Parental Warning

In the news today here in Atlanta.

A man has been arrested in the suburb of Acworth on child pornography charges. He allegedly has been hanging out in department stores like Ross and Walmart taking pictures of children in "compromising positions." The article in the newspaper said something about pics of kids sitting on the floor, wearing shorts.
A friend of mine from a men's Bible study I used to attend had a similar experience when his adolescent daughter was photgraphed by a man hiding in the changing room of a mall clothing store. They caught the guy, but again, please protect your children.

Another article today, a 33 year-old man was arrested by police in the suburb of Peachtree City wanting to meet a 14 year-old girl for sex. This was the 20th arrest made in 3 years by Peachtree City's Internet offender task force. What makes this one a little worse is he is identified as being a manager of a local Chick-fil-a restaurant (I work for Chick-fil-a) and we hire starting at age 14.

My personal rant... Parents, please wake up and be aware of the reality that people like this are out in our society. In particular, for those of you with young girls who allow them to run around wearing shorts with words written across the butt like "Cheer." Your kids may think this is cute. YOU may think this is cute. Please, think for a moment.

DO YOU WANT THE ATTENTION OF ADULT MEN DRAWN TO THE REAR OF YOUR LITTLE GIRL?
